The Unseen

Tiara Brahmarani and Nalitari
Country:
Indonesia

Exploring a co-creation process that centres lived experiences, the members of Nalitari dance to tell their struggles of exclusion and their hope for an inclusive society. Together they present Bu Wiwit and Nadya’s story, Arsa and Didi’s story, and Fai’s story.

We started from the feelings, from the stories of the collaborators, and then from there we created the movements for those stories.

The Unseen project gave an opportunity for people living with disability and/or family of people living with disability a safe space to speak up their voices and share untold stories from their lives. Not only that the stories come from the collaborators, but also they take part in the choreography to present their story.

After the bullying experience, I developed and was able to open up more, dare to show my abilities as a dancer, and finally be who I am now.

Through The Unseen project, Nalitari and I learn how to do our work more inclusively than what we’ve done before. Not only inclusive in the participants level but also in the process of creating the work itself.

Another important lesson is we also found a new methodology of creating inclusive choreography. The Unseen is also a project where everyone had a chance to contribute, from the artistic director to the dancers choosing their own costume and movements.
