ELECTION PROCESS FOR INNOVATION FOR CHANGE-EAST ASIA GOVERNANCE CIRCLE (EAGC) June 2023

Innovation for Change – East Asia invites the #I4CEastAsia community to participate in the election process of the East Asia Governance Circle (EAGC) from May to June 2023.

 

ABOUT THE I4C-EAST ASIA GOVERNANCE CIRCLE

The EAGC is the core governing body for the I4C-EA Hub. The EAGC ensures that the I4C-EA Hub’s work is in line with the values, vision, and mission of Innovation for Change. The EAGC provides oversight to the work of the I4C-EA Hub team.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE EAST ASIA GOVERNANCE CIRCLE

The EAGC makes collaborative governance decisions for the I4C-EA Hub, and delegates operational tasks to the I4C-EA Hub. The EAGC is responsible for the following areas:

■  Provides oversight on the I4C-East Asia Hub

■  Ensures the hub’s strategic direction by convening periodic Hub Strategy processes, which set strategic thrusts and themes, and in turn guide I4C-EA co-design workshops where solutions and services are co-created into hub projects

■  Convenes the Civic Innovation Fair, a periodic regional celebration of the work of I4C-EA Hub

■  Oversees financial and legal accountability

■  Oversees hub sustainability

■  Through making collaborative governance decisions, the EAGC provides oversight to the I4C-EA Hub’s financial and legal accountability, and sustainability. The EAGC also guides the hub towards fulfilling its strategic thrusts and themes.

 

EAST ASIA GOVERNANCE CIRCLE MEMBERS

The five members that constitute the EAGC serve on a voluntary basis, with no remuneration for time served. All of them serve for two years and are relieved at the end of of their term. Alternately two or three new members are elected each year.

 

BENEFITS DERIVED FROM SERVING IN THE EAST ASIA GOVERNANCE CIRCLE

Members of the EAGC derive the following non-financial benefits:

■  Leadership experience in a regional community that comes together on civic space issues

■  Leadership experience in a regional community that supports diverse social movements in solidarity building, capacity building, and networking

■  Leadership experience in a regional community that seeks to innovate in its ways of working

■  Experience of a flatter, less hierarchical kind of governance

 

CURRENT AND OUTGOING EAGC MEMBERS (as of May 2023)*

Member/Term/Status

*(Due to an I4C network wide adjustment of terms of governance bodies in all regional hubs, EAGC terms ending in December 2022 have been extended till June 2023, and those ending in December 2023 have been extended till June 2024)

  • Vino Lucero, Philippines – Jan 2022-Dec 2023, extended till June 2024
  • Cornelius Hanung, Indonesia – Jan 2022-Dec 2023, extended till June 2024
  • Candy Yun, South Korea – Jan 2021-Dec 2022, extended till June 2023
  • Khoo Ying Hooi, Malaysia – Jan 2021-Dec 2022, extended till June 2023
  • Leni Velasco, Philippines – Jan 2021-Dec 2022, extended till June 2023

As Candy, Ying Hooi, and Leni’s terms are ending by June 2023, three EAGC seats will need to be filled. Meanwhile, Hanung has resigned as an EAGC member and his seat also needs to be filled by someone to serve the remainder of his term.

Therefore, by the end of June 2023, four new EAGC members need to be elected:
three (3) EAGC Member seats to serve a two-year term from July 2023 to June 2025
one (1) EAGC Member seat to serve a one-year term, from July 2023 to June 2024

 

THE EAGC ELECTION PROCESS and TIMELINE 

■  REGISTRATION will be available to all East Asia community members from 29 May to 5 June 2023

■  NOMINATIONS to the EAGC will be received from 6 to 10 June 2023

■  The list of NOMINEES to the EAGC and the link to the VOTING FORM will be shared with registered community members on 12 June 2023

■  ELECTIONS will be done electronically through a ten-day period from 19-28 June 2023.
